Artist Statement:

“Interior” is a selection of work created during Felix Atkinson’s residency at Q Bank Gallery in Queenstown during the month of April 2017.

Felix’s work for this exhibition follows similar themes he has been working with in the past few years, particularly the reflections on psychic realities and the indefinable aspects of the human condition. With this residency, Felix desired to create interior spaces that reflected psychic realities. In doing so, Felix’s paintings are ambiguous narratives in a world that is simultaneously familiar yet strange, much like our own. Surrounded by picturesque landscape, beautiful scenery need not be sympathetic to its inhabitants and their inner world, and the paintings reflect on this conflict.

Felix Atkinson’s paintings are an ongoing meditation on the depths of the psyche and the indefinable nature of the human condition. External reality exists together with that which cannot be defined, creating ambiguous and primal imagery. Through means of abstraction and figuration, Atkinson’s work is emotional in its familiarity yet raw in its physicality. Felix Atkinson is a fine artist working and living in Melbourne, Australia.

"One small step," the title of the show, refers to the famous words uttered in 1969 by Neil Armstrong when he was the first human to make contact with the Moon's surface. Like Armstrong, Christopher and Conrad journeyed far and created works on what was once a very lunar-like surface due to mining (now coming back to life).
